Jill’s Journal: It is hot. Really hot. The massive heat wave on the East Coast must have spread this way, because triple-digit temperatures in Kentucky just don’t happen very often. It was 104 degrees today, confirmed on both our car’s thermometer and the local bank temperature sign we drove by. I grew up in the California desert and then spent four years in Phoenix, so 104 normally wouldn’t phase me (that would be a cool summer day in Phoenix!)…but when that 104 degrees has what feels like 5,000% humidity attached, it’s a whole ‘nother level of brutality. Even the pool offers no relief – the water is so hot it feels like you’ve just jumped into a giant boiling pot of water while simultaneously being baked under the sun.

Being the savvy traveler that I am or maybe just lucky, I scheduled a cave visit for today (since we are in cave country and caves are generally pretty cool in temperature year-round). We made the trek to the Lost River Cave….. read more on RV for 5′s Blog

Next time you’re hiking in the woods or walking through your neighborhood, collect a few pine cones to use in making this pine cone wreath. Here’s what you’ll need: pipe cleaners, 10 to 15 round pine cones, a pencil, a large sheet of cardboard, a large plate and a salad plate, green poster paint, a paper punch, some spare yarn or ribbon, and finally some string.

To get started, take your pipe cleaners and wrap one around the last ring of scales on the bottom of each pine cone, leaving one end longer than the other.

Next, make the base of your wreath. Draw a large circle on the sheet of cardboard with a large dinner plate. Make a smaller circle inside the larger one with the salad plate. Cut the larger circle from the cardboard and then the smaller circle from the larger one so that you’ve made a ring. You should have a piece of cardboard the shape of a wreath.

Now, if you want, paint the cardboard green or any color you like with poster paint. After the paint dries, it’s time to add the pine cones. Punch a hole in the center of your cardboard ring. It’s time to start adding the pine cones.

Take one of your pine cones and put the pipe cleaner ends through the hole and then line-up your next pine cone to find out where the next hole should be punched. After you’ve made the second hole, stick the pipe cleaner for the second pine cone through the hole.

If you turn over the wreath you should have two sets of pipe cleaners. Twist the pipe cleaner ends of the first and second cones together to secure them to the ring. Continue this process until the whole wreath is covered with pine cones and they are all secured.

No wreath is ever complete without a bow, so add that next. Make a nice bow from spare ribbon or yarn. Use a pipe cleaner that looks good with the bow and attach it to the wreath the same way you did the pine cones.

Now the only thing missing is a way to hang it. Take a 12-15″ piece of string and tie the ends together. Wrap part of the loop you just made under the bottom of the top-most pine cone and use the rest of the loop as a hanger.

And, that’s it. You’re ready to hang it up.

Have you ever noticed the cool designs you see on the underside of a mushroom? Each one is unique and different. You can use mushrooms and paint to create some fun mushroom prints. Here’s how.

Collect the following materials: poster paint, paintbrushes, some shiny paper, a piece of cardboard or newspaper and of course, mushrooms.

Remember, that some mushrooms you find in nature are poisonous. So be careful and make sure to wash your hands when you’re done…or you can use store bought portabellas.

First, break off the stem of your mushroom. You may also want to remove some of the outer cap of the mushroom if it’s covering up the gills. Now, take your poster paint and paintbrush and paint the gills of your mushroom. You can use one color or multiple colors…you just need to make sure you have enough brushes for each color.

It’s time to make your first print. Hold the painted mushroom, cap side down, over the paper where you want your print, and set it down gently. Now lightly press down on the mushroom to transfer the paint. You can probably get about two or three prints per coat of paint.

The design from the mushroom’s gills creates an amazing design. Keep adding more prints to make a painting. You can cut some of the mushrooms into quarters to make different designs. Keep on going until you have a colorful creation that you can show off to your friends.

Read about the American Bald Eagle and how it rises into the air using thermals. Then, with the help of paper, glue, and scissors, you can make a mobile that will let the eagles rise.

What you’ll need: one white paper plate, scissors, glue, and thread.

Here’s what you do:

Print out the eagle silhouette page, cut out the four eagle silouettes, then set them aside.

Cut the ribbed edge off of the paper plate. Using the middle of the paper p

late, start on one side and begin to cut in a spiral toward the center. Each part of the spiral should be about l/2 inch wide. You may want to draw a line to cut along.

Glue the eagle silhouettes along the spiral as if they were circling upward. Glue the eagles by their bodies and bend their wings slightly upward.

With a hole punch make a hole in the center of the inside loop for hanging. Attach a thread and hang up your mobile. If you hang your mobile near a heat source, it will spin and the eagles will look like they are rising with the warm air.

Caution: Do not hang your mobile so that it might touch a heat source. Remember, it’s made of paper and will burn easily.
